OUR MEDICATION PATHWAY

Supporting you beyond your ADHD diagnosis.

Receiving an ADHD diagnosis can bring clarity and a better understanding of the challenges you may have experienced. For some adults, the next step may be to explore whether medication could help manage their symptoms and improve day-to-day life.

At Berkshire Psychology, we offer a carefully managed ADHD medication pathway. Our approach is personal, supportive and focused on finding the option that is right for you.

ADHD MEDICATION PATHWAY

Is ADHD medication right for me?

Medication may help reduce the impact of core ADHD symptoms, including difficulties with attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. This can make everyday tasks, work, relationships and general wellbeing feel more manageable.

However, medication is not the right choice for everyone and we can provide information regarding medication options upon request.

During your consultation, we will discuss:

  • The symptoms you are experiencing and how they affect your daily life
  • Whether medication may be suitable for you
  • The different types of ADHD medication available
  • The potential benefits and possible side effects
  • Any relevant medical history or existing medication
  • What you would like to achieve through treatment

Medication is always a personal decision. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and consider your options without pressure.

Your pathway begins with a consultation with an appropriately qualified clinician. They will review your ADHD diagnosis, medical history, current health and any medication you are already taking.

Further health checks or information may be required before medication can be prescribed.

2. Discussing your options

Your clinician will explain the medication options that may be suitable for you, including how they work, how they are taken and any potential side effects.

Together, you will agree on a treatment plan based on your individual needs, preferences and circumstances.

3. Starting medication

If medication is considered suitable and you decide to proceed, you will usually begin with a carefully selected dose. Clear guidance will be provided on how and when to take your medication, along with what to expect during the first few weeks.

4. Medication reviews

Titration is the process of gradually adjusting your medication to find a dose that provides the greatest benefit while keeping side effects to a minimum.

During this stage, your clinician will arrange regular reviews and may monitor areas such as:

    Changes in your ADHD symptoms

How long the effects of the medication last

    Any side effects you experience

Your blood pressure and heart rate

Your appetite, sleep and general wellbeing

Finding the most suitable medication and dose can take time. We will support you throughout the process and make adjustments carefully.

5. Ongoing review

Once your medication has been stabilised, ongoing reviews help ensure it continues to be safe and effective. These appointments also provide an opportunity to discuss any changes in your symptoms, health or circumstances.

AFTERCARE

Shared care with your GP.

Once you are taking a stable dose, it may be possible to request a shared care arrangement with your GP. Under shared care, your GP may take over routine prescribing while specialist reviews and monitoring continue as required.

Shared care is subject to your GP’s agreement and the relevant local policies, so it cannot always be guaranteed. We will explain the process clearly and provide the necessary information where a shared care request is appropriate.

WHY CHOOSE US

A safe and individual approach.

There is no single approach to ADHD treatment that works for everyone. Our priority is to help you make an informed decision and provide a pathway centred around your safety, wellbeing and treatment goals.

Medication may also form part of a wider support plan that includes practical strategies, psychological support and adjustments at work or in education.
